Hello! So I’m going to secondary education for History and English (which are the most popular areas for people wanting to be high school teachers) and I live in Michigan. Given that there aren’t many jobs in Michigan period, but it seems especially hard for teachers to get jobs around here. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get hired or where or has anyone heard any encouraging news for aspiring teachers? The most encouraging advice I get from my professors or anyone else is that there are plenty of teaching jobs out of state :-/

Unfortunately, your profs are correct. There are no teaching jobs in Michigan right now. You can try substitute teaching. My best advise is to look outside of state…try Maryland…better pay and hiring. (college prof in Michigan)

I am looking for a job, and I appreciate any suggestions that I can get.

I am a 17 year old female looking for a fun job.
And I prefer not to work in the mall.

there’s always work in construction, and strip-clubs if you turn 18 soon.

im a 12 year old going on 13 that wants to apply for a job, but is there any job close to New Haven that will hire a 12-13 year old?

Except for the entertainment areas, most legitimate companies won’t hire 12/13 year olds because there are child labor laws against it. Plus there is a lot of liabilty issues. You should try locally in your neighborhood to see if any stores will hire you to learn how to do things in the store or shop. Or set up a dog walking service (but you have to be seriously committed to doing your job because you’ll be relying on your positive reputation). Let teachers, relatives, parents of little kids (at school?) and church that you are available for hire for baby sitting or picking up young kids after school and walking them home. Ask your neighbors if they want to hire you to help with gardening, cleaning gutters, putting up Christmas decorations, vacuuming, dusting, washing windows, etc.

I’m 14 and 10 months. if yeah, where do you suggest?

It depends on what your state laws of getting a job at 14.
Its tough but you have to ask around.
Most jobs don’t hire people until they are 16. Some but not a lot at 15.
You can always try babysitting.

I lost my job this morning i work for a company with a pretty high turn over rate and it turned over me also well at any rate i would like to continue customer service clerical work. I live in Detroit Michigan. Any suggestions would be great.

Nina, Sorry to hear you lost your job. I lost mine in 2003. Just remember "This too Shall Pass"

The State of Michigan Talent Bank may have something in your area, I cannot say about the pay. Remember, to keep your resume available to employers you must refresh it at least once a month. I found that out the hard way.

If you are using any of the other employment search services I suggest you create a hotmail, gmail, or other free service email address and forward it to your real email. I’m still getting spam from "amazing" jobs. what a waste…

I would also see if you qualify for the No Worker Left Behind program with the State (or a State of Michigan Job)

I’m trying to help someone I know get a career in Michigan. Anyone know of any good jobs? Preferably, ones that offer a scholarship and pay relatively well. Thanks a bunch (:

LOL they are looking in the wrong state. I dont know of any that give scholarships but if they dont mind working 60-70hours/week Quicken loans is a great company to work for. The perks and discounts are amazing! They are affiliated with an online university meaning that you canr eceive a discount which is certainly nice. Other than that good luck finding that in michigan.

We have a 2 year old daughter as well and we're scared we're going to lose our home. We have no income and can't pay rent. We really need help!

Dani,

Most likely Jackson County offers a program but you may also want to try the State of Michigan to see if you qualify.

Just in case, look for the Michigan Talent Bank on the website below for jobs

I live in michigan where there are no jobs. unemployment is above 25% now. I have management experience and one semester away from graduating college. But for right now im stuck! I cant get a better job without the experience and cant get the experience needed because no companies are hiring. Does anyone have any ideas? Advise? Job offers?? lol

You might want to consider being a lieutenant in the US Army. It will completely fill 3 years of your life until the economy gets better. When you apply for any federal job, they must hire veterans first so you will get hired.
Or you can apply to work at a major hotel chain. You can be a manager in 2 years and the job is fun.
