Michigan is notorious for its almost never-ending recession and increasing unemployment. Not to mention the fact that plants and factories are being shut down every other month.
My question is: what should I do? Are there any out-of -state jobs I should look for?
I graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a BA in criminal justice and sociology in 2005. I have limited experienced, but I was an office assistant for three years. What should I do?
You need to target a specific job or family of jobs or you'll just be spinning your wheels trying to be "flexible," whether you stay in Michigan or leave.
Assuming that your major in criminal justice reflected an interest in that field:
* A quick search of Indeed.com on "criminal justice" (without the quotes) and Michigan found 65 jobs in a variety of locations in Michigan. Refine that search with better keywords to get better results. http://www.indeed.com
* A Google search on "criminal justice" (without the quotes), Michigan, and association turned up this incredible page from the Michigan State University Libraries with hundreds of associations in that field - http://www.lib.msu.edu/harris23/crimjust/assn.htm - including several in Michigan. You can do a variation on that search on Google, Yahoo, and MSN to find many more resources. Associations are wonderful places to pick up the latest news AND to connect with employers and/or future colleagues.
* Job-Hunt.org is a very useful site with links to literally thousands of career resources, the vast majority of which are organized by state. The page for Michigan has over 120 links, including to jobs in state and local governments, which may be a good job market for criminal justice majors. http://www.job-hunt.org
* Your college's Career Center should have some assistance available for you. Look for job postings from employers who want to recruit school graduates and also alumni who are willing to help mentor newer alums into their industry or even company.
* Michigan's state employment office has both online and offline help for you, too. http://www.michigan.gov/som/0,1607,7-192-29940—,00.html
That should get you started.
Don't be too discouraged! Use your network of friends from school and home and your family to watch for opportunities for you. They'll need to know what you want to recognize something for you when they see it, though, so you do need to tell them what you want.
Good luck with your job search!
